Medium is not the message, guys

“I loves me a meta-post in the morning.” ~me

This comment from a good friend on Twitter prompted me to write this.

Medium, this platform in which you’re reading this, is more than a harbinger of words organized in a specific way.

It’s supposed to be a place to share and savour ideas and thoughts. It’s one approach, out of an infinite number of possible approaches, carefully designed and implemented by a team of professionals under the guidance of other people with a specific vision.

All the decisions taken — from the sleek, clean text editor to the commenting and applause system — aim to advance the sharing and enjoying of knowledge and ideas, to advance the platform’s main goal. Ever wondered why it feels so natural to read on Medium? Typographic work, along with all the care and dedication it comes with it.

On top of the knowledge pearls, aka, the content, sits a layer of social and recommendations. This layer is what brings your content to new eyes and to open feedback. Is Twitter just a micro-blogging platform?

Yes, own your data. Publish on your site first, syndicate on others next. And be happy that these sites exist to give your content visibility.

And now go and write great content, bonus points if it’s not about tech (or publishing platforms).

(Thanks Giovanni Cappellotto for the friendly bump.)
